Short answer: before you press brew, change the cup size to 6 or 8 oz and turn off the "strong" setting. Those two changes take about 10 seconds and fix most bitter green tea from a K-Cup brewer.

If your green tea has ever tasted bitter, grassy or flat, the tea is usually not the problem. The machine settings are. Here is why it happens, and a few more easy tweaks for a smooth, light cup every time.
The 10-second fix
- Choose 6 or 8 oz. That is the sweet spot for one green tea capsule. Larger sizes push extra hot water through the capsule and pull out bitterness.
- Turn off "strong" or "bold". If your brewer has this button, it slows the water down to extract more. Great for coffee, bad for green tea.
- Press brew. That is it.
Why green tea turns bitter in a coffee brewer
Green tea is more delicate than black tea. It brews best with water around 160 to 180°F (70 to 80°C). Most K-Cup brewers heat water to about 190°F or more, because they are made for coffee. Very hot water pulls bitter compounds out of green tea leaves, and the more water goes through the capsule, the more bitterness ends up in the cup.
You usually cannot change the water temperature, but you can control how much water goes through the pod and how slowly. That is why the cup size and the "strong" button matter so much.
3 more tips for an even better cup
- Lower the temperature if you can. Some newer brewers have a temperature setting. If yours does, choose the lowest option for green tea.
- Run a water-only cycle first. If you also brew coffee, run one cycle without a pod before your tea. It clears any coffee taste from the machine.
- Take the pod out right away. A used capsule left in the brewer can drip into the next cup.

Quick answers
Why does my green tea taste bitter in a K-Cup brewer? Usually the cup size is too large or the "strong" setting is on. Use 6 to 8 oz per capsule and a normal brew.
What cup size is best for green tea? 6 to 8 oz per pod.
How much caffeine is in green tea? Usually about a third to a half of a cup of coffee, depending on the tea and the cup size. For no caffeine at night, choose decaf green tea or a herbal tea such as peppermint or hibiscus.
Can I make iced green tea with a K-Cup brewer? Yes. Brew on the smallest cup size directly over a glass full of ice. The stronger tea holds its taste as the ice melts.
Can I add milk? Most people drink green tea plain. A little honey or a slice of lemon works better than milk.
